Whether you’re updating the look of your existing house, or you need a painter for a new build, there’s an underlying question: how much does it cost to paint a house in Perth? Understanding the cost and what’s included allows you to set your budget and plan ahead.

According to Joe Cochrane from AJ Cochrane & Sons, the price varies, depending on a range of factors. Let’s take a look at these.

The size of your house

The size of the space you’re painting will impact the cost. The larger the space, the more paint you’ll need. Larger spaces might also need more than one painter to do the job, which will increase the price as well.

Interior vs exterior

The cost is different when you’re painting the inside of the home vs the outside of the home. Inside the home usually involves less preparation and won’t take as long to complete, which means it is usually a lot more affordable. However, interiors require careful attention to details, particularly around lighting fixtures and trimming.

Outside the home, painters deal with weathering, dirt, and removal of old paint. Exterior paint can also be more expensive as it needs to be durable enough to suit the elements.

Preparation

The amount of pre-painting preparation is important in determining the cost. If the home is brand new, you might get away with cheaper painting costs than if the home is old.

Older homes need more preparation, such as removal of previous paint, sanding, filling cracks, applying primer, cleaning dirt and dust, fixing uneven surfaces, and so on.

DIY vs professional

Painting the house yourself might seem like a more affordable option. You’ll save on tradie fees at least. But it’s important to consider if it’s worth it.

DIY means providing all your own materials, so you’ll not only need to buy the paint, but also fillers for any holes or dents in the surface, spatula, sugar soap for cleaning, paint scraper, masking tape, drop cloths, and paint stirrer. Then, of course, there’s the paint brushes, rollers, and trays. All together, these can add up in price!

Also, by painting the home yourself, you risk making mistakes – which you may have to hire a professional to fix anyway.

The right painter makes all the difference

Hiring a professional painter helps guarantee the work is completed efficiently and accurately – for the best price. They’ll usually provide their own equipment, include the cost of high-quality paint in the initial quote, and they know what they’re doing, which can save you money in the long run. The best part is, there’s no hidden surprises with the cost, and you end up with a superior finish without breaking your budget.
